The Nine types of Intelligence: by Howard Gardner
1. Naturalist Intelligence (“Nature Smart”)
2. Musical Intelligence (“Musical Smart”)
3. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence (Number/Reasoning Smart)
4. Existential Intelligence
5. Interpersonal Intelligence (People Smart”)
6. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence (“Body Smart”)
7. Linguistic Intelligence (Word Smart)
8. Intra-personal Intelligence (Self Smart”)
9. Spatial Intelligence (“Picture Smart”)
Considering the list above, how then is it possible for a standardized test that measures only one or two of these intelligence types to indicate the genius of a student? And from where is this notion found that logical thinking and mathematical expertise are the only areas worthy of achieving this coveted title of “smart?” What are schools really teaching us other than to limit our perspectives and dismiss that which does not fall into the stale and constructed idea of “intelligence?” How are most teachers unaware enough to actively neglect mere acknowledgement of these many intelligence forms but somehow capable enough to tell our kids that they’re worthy of passing or being called a failure? If a student shines in one intelligence but cannot succeed in another, how do we bring light to the intelligence they do in fact possess if that intelligence if often scoffed at and ignored? And realistically speaking, how then would it be possible to cater to all nine intelligence types with the limitations that modern school systems are facing? I’m wondering…
